Single, Multi, Virtual or Outsourced?
Four very different ways to organize family-office services—and why the label matters less than the responsibility map.
A single family office serves one family; a multi-family office serves multiple families; virtual and outsourced models coordinate external specialists. Regulatory and fiduciary obligations depend on what services are actually provided.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
SFOs offer control but carry high fixed costs.
MFOs offer shared infrastructure but require careful evaluation of conflicts and service scope.
Virtual/outsourced models can be efficient when the family has strong coordination and data governance.
Single family office
A dedicated organization can centralize investments, accounting, bill pay, tax coordination, governance and special projects for one family. The benefit is customization and control. The cost is staffing, technology, compliance and key-person risk.
Multi-family office
An MFO serves more than one family and may provide investment, reporting, tax coordination, trust, administration or concierge services. Because multiple clients are involved, the SEC single-family-office exclusion is not a blanket answer for the provider.
Virtual and outsourced models
A virtual model keeps a small coordinating core while outsourcing legal, tax, investment, insurance, cyber and administrative functions. Done well, it can provide institutional discipline without institutional headcount. Done poorly, it becomes the same old silo problem with a new name.
FAQ
Which model is best?
The model that matches complexity, desired control, privacy, budget, internal talent and regulatory needs.
Can an advisor simply call their practice an MFO?
The label does not substitute for analyzing applicable investment-adviser, broker-dealer, trust, insurance, tax, legal or other regulatory obligations.
